Glenbard South makes case for a good seed

It's getting to be that time of the year.

After the Glenbard South boys soccer team beat host Lisle 7-0 on Thursday at Wilde Field, Raiders coach T.J. King complimented his team on its play and stressed that the same effort would be needed Friday at Class 3A Willowbrook. Yes, postseason seedings are just around the corner, and teams want to finish as strong as they can before the final decisions are made.

"All the materials are due Wednesday," King said.

Besides facing Willowbrook, Class 2A Glenbard South is at Aurora Central Catholic on Tuesday before determination of seeds begins.

The outcome of the nonconference contest against the Class 1A Lions (4-12) was settled early, and the Raiders played consistently through most of the contest.

"We played a good game. It was an opportunity for guys that don't get a lot of minutes. I was impressed with the guys that came off the bench and played into our system," King said.

Mike Dimoula opened the scoring for the Raiders 1:27 into the game. It was the first of 6 goals scored in the first half. Glenbard South moved into the Lisle half of the field and stayed there, leading in shots on goal 8-0 in the first 40 minutes and 11-1 for the game.

Matt Waters made it 2-0 with a shot about 10 yards out with 29:31 left until halftime. Jonathan Gutierrez, Chris Enright, Lucas Sampson and Joe Jennings added goals of their own.

With 22:47 left in the game, Ben MinCungLian closed out the scoring for the Raiders to make it 7-0 and rules dictated that the remaining time be cut in half.

The winning goalkeepers were Keaton Tenhouse and Mike Koening, with each playing a half. King said the balanced offense showed by his team has been that way all season.

"It has been a team effort all year. Guys have stepped up in different games. There's not one guy that teams can focus on," the Glenbard South coach said.

A rough season continues for Lisle.

"I started three JV players today. The whole bench was JV. We have players out that are sick, injured or for other reasons," Lions coach Paul Kohorn said. "I have had one game where I had the full roster. We're not deep on the bench and have struggled. It's not been a typical season. We're doing the best we can."
