Motorcycle run in Des Plaines calls attention to heroin epidemic

A motorcycle run will make its way through Des Plaines, Mount Prospect and Arlington Heights Saturday to call attention to the growing heroin epidemic in the suburbs, organizers say.

Some 100 bikers have already signed up for the bike run, which begins at 11:30 a.m. from American Legion Post 36 in Des Plaines and is expected to end by 1 p.m. at the forest preserves at Algonquin and Camp Ground roads in Des Plaines. During the run, bikers are expected to stop at All Saints Cemetery to hold a moment of silence at the gravesite of Stephanie Chiakas, a 17-year-old who in March 2013 died of a heroin overdose in Crystal Lake.

A post-ride party at the forest preserves will feature music from Tripple Shot and Unhinged, food, a raffle, and resource tables. Tickets are $15. Proceeds will go to the Chicago Recovery Alliance.
