Police: Homeless man stole from Bartlett home

A 50-year-old man was charged Thursday with stealing an undisclosed amount of money and personal items from a Bartlett home, police said.

Charles R. Yagac was charged with residential burglary and two counts of unlawful possession of a controlled substance.

At about 8:30 a.m., Bartlett officers responded to the area of East Morse Avenue and north Eastern Avenue to investigate a report of a suspicious person who was knocking on the front and rear doors of a home while claiming to work for a roofing company, police said in a news release.

Police then received a report that the suspicious person entered a single-family home in the 100 block of east Morse Avenue.

Officers surrounded the home and took Yagac into custody as he attempted to escape from the back of the residence, police said.

An investigation determined that Yagac took a small amount of money and other items when residents were not home, Sgt. Geoffrey Pretkelis said. Yagac also was found with prescription drugs he was "not authorized to have," Pretkelis said.

Yagac told police he was homeless. Pretkelis said his last known address was in Bartlett.

Yagac is scheduled to appear in bond court Friday.

Police are investigating if other homes were targeted.
