CLC student literary magazine wins first place award; four win individual awards

The 2013-14 edition of Prairie Voices, the College of Lake County's student literary arts magazine, has won first place in the central division of the Community College Humanities Association 2014 Literary Magazine Competition. The magazine has been published annually since spring 1993.

"It is a particular honor to win this award - the first 'first place' that the journal has received," said its editor, Nicholas Schevera, Ph.D., professor of English and humanities.

"This year we took special care to make it different by examining other journals for ideas and inspirations, but making it uniquely our own. For many students, this is their first time being published, and their faculty mentors are extremely excited for them.

"This publication is a joint effort by many people, including the 50 writers and 34 artists who contributed poetry, prose and artwork; the faculty; the staff in Public Relations; and Bob Lossmann, art editor. It is a labor of love, and I can't wait to start next year's edition."

In addition to the overall award, four CLC students were recognized for individual achievements.

In the category Writing: Nonfiction/Essay, Yazmin Garcia-Morales of Zion won first place for "Your Life as a Bisexual," and Andrew Torres of Mundelein received honorable mention for "Generation X."

In the Art category, Geovanni Gonzalez of Highwood won first place for a charcoal drawing, and Leah Pibolis of Wauconda received honorable mention for her watercolor.

CLC students interested in being published in next year's edition should submit writing to Dr. Schevera and artwork to Bob Lossmann by Dec. 1. For more information, contact Schevera at com409@clcillinois.edu or (847) 543-2959.

Copies of Prairie Voices are available for purchase in the CLC bookstore for $6.
