Splash of color raises spirits of East Dundee, Carpentersville residents

In extending a tradition of more than 20 years, approximately 40 volunteers came together on Sept. 6 to participate in the annual Carpentersville Paint-A-Thon.

With experience ranging from novice do-it-yourselfers to highly skilled painters and carpenters, the group spent the day making the lives of a disabled veteran and a longtime resident a little brighter with each stroke of a brush. And, as tradition dictates, there was no cost to the homeowners.

Numerous sponsors came together to provide materials and labor at no cost, including the Home Depot of Schaumburg, Habitat for Humanity of Nothern Fox Valley, AccuProNow Restoration and PCCR USA Inc. Local eateries El Molino's Restaurant and The Village Squire provided lunch for all of the volunteers.

The annual event has developed into a true labor of love. Members of the Odd Fellows Elgin Lodge 12 and local citizens spent the day volunteering their services to clean surfaces, painting the home exteriors and even replaced a storm door for one of the homeowners.

"When you have local residents, local businesses and local organizations coming together to help people, it is truly moving," said Ken Pozehl, one of the longtime organizers of the event. "This event is a great example of what being a community is all about."

Homeowners who wish to benefit from the program must meet certain criteria, including being a senior citizen or a permanently disabled veteran in need. Plans are already under way for selecting homes and accepting donations for the 2015 annual Carpentersville Paint-A-Thon.
