Pivotal win for Palatine

Palatine's girls volleyball team defeated visiting Schaumburg for the second time this season on Tuesday night.

But this one was the first in the Mid-Suburban West, where the Saxons had been undefeated.

Led by Jessica Lundell (11 kills), Meg Angelaccio (6), Alaina Mikkelsen (6) and Heather Holz (5), the Pirates posted a 25-21, 25-20 victory and moved to within one match of first place behind Fremd (5-1) and Schaumburg (5-1).

The Pirates, who fell to Schaumburg in three sets in the MSL West season opener, defeated the Saxons at the Peggy Scholten Volleyball Classic a few days later.

Sydney Christiansen collected 25 assists for Palatine while Alyssa Kronberg paced the back row with 9 digs. Kronberg was also 11-of-11 serving with an ace. Holz had a team-high 4 blocks.

Schaumburg (12-6) was led on attack by Oyinkan Akinola (12 kills), Abbie Rahn (4) and Katherine Coombs (2) while Jada Blackwell made 12 digs and Hannah Moore was 11-of-11 serving.

Fremd d. Hoffman Estates: Lane Hindeburg (11 kills), Hope Schroeder (4) and Maise Koo (3) led the attack for host Fremd (14-5, 5-1) in a 25-13, 25-8 victory as Jackie Mursuli (12 assists) and Carly Roberts (7) handled the setting chores.

Kaitlyn Imburgia (3 kills) and Kelsey Warford (2) led the Hawks (2-17, 0-6).

Hersey d. Prospect: Hersey (16-4, 6-0) is the only Mid-Suburban League team left with an undefeated conference record as the visiting Huskies prevailed 25-21 25-19 behind Gabri Olhava (11 kills), Liz Fuerst (10), Kelly Hill (7), Caity Strozewski (2) and Katie Rozanski (1).

All of them received their cues from senior setter Courtney Stedman, who was 63-of-64 with 29 assists. Teammate Paige Pannozzo collected 17 assists.

Prospect setter Michelle Haaning handed out 16 assists with Mary Mazurek and Catherine Sherwood each putting down 5 kills. Kaelli Myers (10 digs) and Sarah Cutaia (8) led the back row for the Knights (7-7, 3-3).

Wheeling d. Rolling Meadows: Visiting Wheeling (9-10, 4-2) stayed in contention in the MSL East with a 26-28, 25-16, 26-24 victory.

Timber Terrell (11 kills), Deanna Kuzmanic (9) and Lani Greenberg (7) were top attackers for the Wildcats who received 27 digs from Alexa Laureano and 25 assists from Sabrina Semeria.

Nora Rasche and Megan King each served 3 aces for Meadows (5-16, 1-5) which was led on attack by Hannah Mickey (10 kills), Maddie Sellergren (6 kills) and Rasche (5 kills).

King (10 assists) and Megan Mich (11 assists) set the attack.

Buffalo Grove d. Elk Grove: Sara Biesiadecki and Alicia Kantor each had 7 kills for host Buffalo Grove (12-6, 4-2) in a 25-10, 25-17 victory. Marie Georgoulis handed out 13 assists and Maddi Morini had 5 digs for BG.

Elk Grove (5-14, 1-5) was paced by Amber Lindfors (3 kills, 1 block).

Marian Central d. St. Viator: Marian Central Catholic posted a 25-17, 25-21 East Suburban Catholic Conference victory over the visiting Lions (15-5-1, 0-1) in Woodstock.

Alyssa Forbes and Grace Fedus each had 6 kills for Viator while teammate Kaitlyn O'Brien collected 17 assists. Ellie Meyer made 14 digs.

Willowbrook d. Leyden: Visiting Willowbrook won the West Suburban Gold match 25-17, 25-14 as the Eagles slipped to 9-9 and 2-1.
