Trustee resigns; applicants sought for vacancy

Huntley village trustee Nick Hanson has resigned to take a job in Cincinnati, officials said Tuesday.

Mayor Chuck Sass said Hanson's input has been an asset to the board with his construction management experience.

"He has been valuable to the village as we have been adding new commercial developments," Sass said.

Hanson, who unseated one-term trustee Jayant Kadakia in 2011, had run-ins with police during his first term in office. He was reprimanded in 2012 for his role in a feud with a local bar owner over a woman. Hanson pleaded guilty to attempted disorderly conduct and was sentenced to a year of supervision and a $50 fine.

Hanson's seat is up for election in April.

Sass has 60 days to appoint Hanson's replacement, which requires village board approval. He said a few people have approached him for the job.

"I'm not in a major rush to get it filled," Sass said.

Sass added, it would be good to have a full complement of trustees, if there ever is a tied vote. That hasn't happened more than two or three times during Sass' 14 years as mayor.

Sass said he is waiting to see who is running for the trustee seat in the April 7 consolidated election since Tuesday is the first day candidates could pick up nomination packets.

"I really don't want anybody that's looking at running next year," said Sass, adding that it would give that person an unfair advantage over other potential candidates. "Let them earn their way. I don't want it to look like there is any politics involved."

Some village board members took issue when former trustee Kadakia sought to get appointed to the board after losing in the 2011 election to Hanson.

Sass said a candidate with some experience would be beneficial since the village board is working on next year's budget.
