Wheeling police search for liquor store robber

Wheeling police are searching for a man who robbed a local liquor store Monday night while wearing a scarf over his face and holding a large hunting knife.

Deputy Chief Todd Wolff said the clerk at Liquor Island, located at 1750 W. Hintz Road, told investigators that the man wore dark clothing and a hooded sweatshirt to further conceal his identity. According to the clerk, the hooded robber reached across the counter and grabbed cash from the register before running out of the store. The robber made off with about $200, police said.

Wolff said the man ran toward the Mallard Lake Apartment Complex, which is located east of the liquor store, and may have fled from there in a dark-colored car. Detectives are interviewing witnesses and reviewing tape from the surveillance cameras at the liquor store and elsewhere.

Wolff asked that anyone with information about the robbery call the Wheeling police at (847) 459-2632.
