St. Charles East takes 10th at Wheeling Invite
Led by junior Jake Meiss and senior Ronnie Griggs, the St. Charles East boys golf team took 10th in the 25-team Wheeling Invitational at Chevy Chase Country Club on Saturday.
Meiss fired a career-best 76 while Griggs came in at 78 on the par-72 layout on Milwaukee Ave. in the northwest suburbs.
"Jake and Ronnie played real solid," said Saints coach John Stock. "Ronnie has been playing solid the last few weeks and Jake is kind of coming on. We've got to find a little more consistency from the others."
Griggs had double bogeys on No. 1 and No. 3, then went 2-over par the next 15 holes.
Overall, Stock was pleased his team's score of 319 in the field headed by champion Loyola (300), Barrington (300) and Prospect (302).
"You always like to better but 300 is a great score by the leaders and that's about what it takes to win here."
Completing the scorecard for St. Charles East were Colin Johnson (82), Gary King (83) and Daniel Haugen (89).
"Gary has been struggling a little the past few weeks but he'll get it back," Stock said. "Colin has played well but he just had trouble with the green today."
Meiss (11th place) just missed the top ten by 1 stroke.
"Jake's 76 didn't even make the top ten," Stock said. "That shows you how good this tournament is."
St. Charles North (327), led by Trevor Kurtzhals (79), placed 15th.
