DAR American History essay contest calls for entries

The Eki Skinner Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution is sponsoring an American History essay contest for area grade and middle school students.

The essay title is "A Child's Journey Through Ellis Island." Essays are to be received by Thursday, Nov. 20.

Students are to imagine that they are traveling through Ellis Island in 1892 and describe their experiences to a cousin who has never heard of Ellis Island.

Next year will mark the 125th anniversary of Ellis Island as an immigration station. Students in grades five through eight in public, private and parochial schools, as well as those who are home schooled, are eligible. The contest is conducted without regard to race, religion, sex or national origin. All of the essays must be the student's original work.

For guidelines, contact Carole Komarek, co-chairman, American History Committee, at (847) 899-2308.

The top Eli Skinner essay contest winner will be among those honored on Feb. 8 during "Recognizing the Your in Our Community" at the Palatine Public Library. A copy of the essay is then sent to the District IV competition.

The winning essays compete on state, regional and national levels.
