Contribute to environmental efforts at Spring Valley

Schaumburg Park District's Spring Valley Nature Center, 1111 E. Schaumburg Road, will host National Public Lands Day from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 20.

Spring Valley welcomes families, youth groups and others interested in learning about stewardship of natural areas and contributing to local environmental efforts.

Participants will help collect seeds of rare native grasses and wildflowers, which will be used to plant additional prairie acreage within Schaumburg parks. Volunteers will receive a packet of native wildflower seeds to take home.

Sports, games and activities will be available for all ages.

Spring Valley features 135 acres of fields, forests, marshes and streams.

"The Schaumburg Park District offers many parks and this is a great opportunity for residents to learn how they can help take care of those parks," said Dave Brooks, manager of conservation services at Spring Valley.

Children and youth groups must be accompanied by an adult. Groups planning to volunteer should call (847) 985-2100. No equipment is needed. Participants should wear long pants and sturdy footwear.
