Hendricks strong for Cubs against Reds

Kyle Hendricks pitched 7 strong innings Wednesday night as the Cubs beat the Cincinnati Reds 3-1 at Wrigley Field to sweep the three-game series.

Hendricks (7-2) gave up 7 hits and 1 run while walking none and striking out four.

The Reds scored in the first inning after being shut out in the first two games of this series. Kristopher Negron led off with a double and was sacrificed to third base by Ramon Santiago. Negron scored on a groundout by Yorman Rodriguez.

The Cubs went ahead in the second on a single by Chris Valaika and a double by Ryan Kalish.

Hendricks worked out of minor trouble in the fourth and sixth innings. In the seventh, he stranded two runners as left fielder Chris Coghlan made a catch at the wall on Negron's line drive.

Luis Valbuena's RBI single in the bottom of the eighth gave the Cubs an insurance run.

Pedro Strop pitched a scoreless eighth for the Cubs, and Hector Rondon earned his 25th save.
