Downtown Morrison on register of historic places

MORRISON - The Main Street Historic District in the northwestern Illinois community of Morrison has been placed on the National Register of Historic Places, according to city officials.

The Gazette in Sterling reports Mayor Everett Pannier says the city was notified of the designation last week, adding THAT the recognition marked an exciting time for the city in Whiteside County of about 4,200 people.

"Recognizing the inherent value of our commercial buildings and their history is a harbinger of many good things to come," Pannier said.

According to City Administrator Barry Dykhuizen, the designation doesn't change requirements for property owners within the district. He says the owner of a building in the district can tear down a building if they want to."

Dykhuizen says the designation will be a great marketing tool for the city, adding tax benefits are available that could bring building improvements and increased property values.

The National Register of Historic Places is the official list of the nation's sites deemed worthy of preservation. It was created by Congress in 1966 to coordinate public and private efforts to protect historic and archaeological resources.
