Great Lakes mayors to meet in Chicago

Mayors from municipalities around the Great Lakes are to meet in Chicago next week, officials said Wednesday, about a month after Lake Erie algae contaminated water in Ohio.

The Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Cities Initiative and Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel will host the summit of Great Lakes mayors on Tuesday. Toxins left behind by Lake Erie algae fouled water for 400,000 people in the Toledo area last month, leaving some without clean tap water for two days.

The summit will focus on protecting and preserving the Great Lakes, organizers said.
