Music notes: Flatfoot 56 tackles punk with bagpipes

Punk, Irish style

Flatfoot 56 is one of Chicago's representatives in the small but devoted "Celtic punk" scene. Like its local peers, the Tossers, Flatfoot 56 adds traditional Celtic sounds like mandolin and bagpipes to its guitar-based punk attack.

Bridging two worlds

The Chicago-based band Mucca Pazza is one of those "it shouldn't work, but it does" things - a huge ensemble that blends the look and sound of marching bands with soul and punk rock. Horns, strings, electric guitar, drums - all of that (and more) is there. Add in the group's offbeat and energetic live act, and you have one of the most interesting bands around. Mucca Pazza will perform this weekend in Naperville with the acclaimed orchestra Chicago Sinfonietta, a pairing which should make for a singular musical experience.

8 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 20, at Wentz Concert Hall, 171 E. Chicago Ave., Naperville. Tickets range from $10 to $58. Go to chicagosinfonietta.org.

Get Blotto

Local favorite Mr. Blotto, a jam band that mixes original material with covers, stops in Lake County this weekend for a suburban show. The band, known for its energy and musical prowess onstage, has cultivated a following that stretches across the Midwest.

9 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 20, at Austin's Fuel Room, 481 Peterson Road, Libertyville. $8. Go to fuelroom.com.

Rock for a cause

Wheaton natives DJs Kings of Class (Bobby DeMaria and Erik "DJ Tsunami" Johnson) will headline a night of music and dancing next week to benefit Ronald McDonald House Charities. Kings of Class is an electronic dance music duo, and it will be joined at the show by bands such as Twitchin Skratch and Zander. The show is free, but attendees are encouraged to make a donation to Ronald McDonald House Charities at entry. A portion of the bar proceeds will go to the charity, as well. 8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 25, at Estate, 1177 N. Elston, Chicago. Go to housemusicsavedmylife.com for info.
