ECommunity takes advantage of new Epic Healthy Living Education Center

Less than two months after its grand opening on Aug. 1, Epic Healthy Living Education Center hosted several education and entertainment events for the Northern suburb communities.

First off was the annual youth art contest, which brought many young artists from Gurnee to Glenview into the center. First, second and third place were awarded to each of the three age groups, 10-12, 13-15 and 16-18 years old.

The first-place winners were Kimberly Xu from Stevenson High School for the age group 16-18; Rebecca Guo from Lake Forest High School for the age group 13-15; and Faith Wang for the age group10-12. Each received a $25 cash award from Epic Center.

Contest grand prize winner Kimberly Xu received an additional $25 cash award and a chance to showcase and auction her artwork for the benefit of Epic Healthy Living Education Center at 2015 Mundelein annual "One World Festival."

Next up, Epic center hosted a seminar on social security presented by Jenny Xu, a certified financial planner from Waddell & Reed, Sept. 12. Despite the poor weather, the class was well attended. Members enjoyed a free dinner as well as Xu's expertise in financial planning.

Future Friday seminar series on financial planning will include topics related to estate planning Oct. 3, insurance planning Nov. 14 and tax saving strategies Dec. 12.

Lastly, nearly 40 members attended the Saturday Night Dance and Karaoke Party Aug. 27. Epic dance and Karaoke party will be a monthly event scheduled for Sept. 27, Nov. 1 and 30 and Dec. 27. The dance party will start at 8 p.m., with the first hour dedicated to instructor-led practice. Line dance was suggested by some members and will be included in addition to smooth, Latin and disco dances.

Senior citizens enjoy free membership and activity at Epic center. While the center encourages senior members to come to Epic any day, the senior gathering day is more tailored toward serving their needs.

Epic center has designated the second Saturday of each month as senior gathering day. A healthy dinner will be provided free to participating seniors at 7 p.m., followed by a free Tai-Chi lesson from Master Guo Jianhua, who has more than 25 years of teaching experience.

Senior members can also play badminton, table tennis, or mah-jongg and card games. The senior gathering days for the rest of 2014 are Oct. 11, Nov. 10, and Dec. 11.

The number of membership and participants to the weekend classes has been steadily increasing. Many members have found their favorite classes and spent many weekend nights at Epic Center exercising and learning.

Healthy eating, tai-chi, yoga, Latin and painting classes have consistently high attendance. Thanks to members' feedback, Epic center has decided to offer more choices of classes on Friday and Saturday.
