Heart & Sole Fitness Recognized by the American Heart Association

Celebrating her 20th anniversary as owner/director of Glen Ellyn-based Heart & Sole Fitness, Inc., Darlene Galgan has been involved with the senior community, providing her unique style of dance/exercise to seniors throughout the area. It was a back surgery that caused Galgan to create her newer style of exercise. Her own limited movement allows her to better relate to this young-at-heart community.

"While this was new to me, the seniors' response to my workout was awe-inspiring," reflected Galgan on her first visits more than 20 years ago. Galgan notes that her participants have taught her the importance of staying active and being involved. "I see that it brings a sense of fulfillment to their lives and keeps them young at heart."

With this milestone, Galgan recently provided demonstrations and parties for the residents of Lexington Square in Lombard and Elmhurst. She wanted to recognize those who helped in her success. To her surprise, she was the one being recognized. Lauren Iwema, a Director with the American Heart Association, presented Galgan a Program Recognition Award along with heart-shaped balloons. "While celebrating Darlene's milestone, the residents demonstrated the various exercises with such joy and vitality. It was so energizing with all the smiles around the room," Iwema said, adding, "Her exercise classes are perfectly tailored to the needs of the senior population, right down to the music."

Galgan is in awe of her participants' determination. "It is thrilling to witness the benefits of movement and to see my participants doing something they enjoy. It is a factor in their wellness and health benefits as they age," she said. She feels blessed to be in such a role. "It's a good thing for me to observe with arthritis creeping in and working around my back surgery. It is so important to keep moving," she added.

With no signs of stopping, Galgan has expanded to meet the demand. Catering to the exercise needs and health of seniors at various locations throughout the suburbs, she has included a Water Workout, Fit and Flex, Tai-Chi Exercise, Chair Yoga Pilates, and Strength and Balance. She's brought in associates to help cover the demand.

Iwema was impressed with Galgan's program. "We appreciate Darlene's support of our lifesaving mission: building healthier lives, free of cardiovascular diseases and stroke," she added.
