Des Plaines man struck, killed by Wheeling squad vehicle

A Des Plaines man is dead after being struck by an on-duty Wheeling police officer in his squad vehicle early yesterday morning. Fredi Morales, 20, was walking by himself just after 5:30 a.m. when he was struck by the unidentified officer near McHenry Road, west of Cedar Run Drive. Morales was pronounced dead on the scene because of his injuries. Full story.

Bears turn things around in a hurry

Even if they drew up the schedule themselves, the 49ers couldn't have picked a better opponent for the first regular-season game at their new Levi's Stadium … or so it seemed in the early going. For the first 28 minutes last night, the Bears' performance was either laughable or pathetic, depending on your perspective. Late in the second quarter, they trailed 17-0 and had been outgained 193-33. It was beginning to look a lot like the Bears' last road game against the 49ers, a 32-7 loss two years ago. Police: Lombard man crashes into 7-Eleven, flees on foot

A Lombard man who authorities say drove his vehicle into the front of a convenience store yesterday morning then fled the scene is in the DuPage County jail facing multiple charges. The DuPage County Sheriff's Office said Junior A. Espinal, 32, of the 800 block of Foxworth Boulevard, crashed his 2004 Acura through the 7-Eleven located at Butterfield Road and Lloyd Avenue near Lombard. "Thankfully no one was injured during this incident," said Sheriff John Zaruba, who was at the scene. Full story.

Firefighter injured, cats killed in Algonquin house fire

A firefighter suffered a minor injury and two cats died in a house fire early yesterday morning in Algonquin. Firefighters from the Algonquin-Lake in the Hills Fire Protection District were dispatched at 5:15 a.m. to reports of a structure fire at 1312 Merrill Ave. in Algonquin. The first crews to arrive about two minutes later found a single-story home with smoke showing. Full story.

Dogs are the stars at Carol Stream's 'CSBarks' event

Four legs definitely were better than two yesterday at the Ross Ferraro Town Center in Carol Stream. The 6th annual "CSBarks" dog festival, organized by the Carol Stream Park District, took place at the Town Center site throughout the day. Hundreds of canines of every size, shape and disposition roamed the grounds and enjoyed the many doggy activities on tap. Full story, including pictures and a video from the event.

Konerko on track to be back in Sox lineup this week
