St. Viator wins Resurrection Invite title

Off to a sizzling 11-2-1 start, St. Viator's girls volleyball team added a tournament championship to its early-season accolades on Saturday afternoon.

The Lions went 4-0-1 to claim the top spot at the Resurrection Invite in Chicago.

St. Viator defeated St. Ignatius, Holy Trinity, Resurrection and North Side College Prep in two games and also had a tie with North Side College Prep.

Junior Alyssa Forbes was St. Viator's top attacker for the tournament as the 5-foot-9 outside hitter went 91-of-108 with 42 kills.

She was followed by Gabi Thomas (49-52, 19 kills), Emily Hayes (22-23, 10 kills) and Samantha Anderson (17-21 8 kills).

Setter Michaela Mueller was 103 of 105 setting with 38 assists for coach Charlie Curtin's offense while Ellie Meyer (52 digs) and Michalea Mueller (28) were leaders in the back row.

Meyer, Karly May and Thomas led the Lions with 8 aces while Forbes had 6 and Mueller 5.

Vernon Hills Tournament: Buffalo Grove earned the championship with a 4-1 record, defeating Vernon Hills, Jones College Prep and Glenbrook North in two sets and taking a three-set win from Jacobs.

Lake Park handed BG its only loss.

Leading the attack for coach Matt Priban's Bison were Sara Tolvstad (21 kills), Alicia Kantor (15), Sara Biesiadecki (13), Teagan Hutchings (13) and Kanela Kalyviaris (12).

Top servers for BG were Kantor (10 aces), Katelyn Sommers (8) and Anna Fasuna (8), who set the offense with 35 assists.

"Everyone stepped up and did a good job," said Priban, whose team improved to 10-5 and sits one match out of first place in the Mid-Suburban East at 2-1.

Leyden Invite: The host Eagles took third place on their own six-team event, netting wins over Addison Trail, Westmont and Niles North while falling to tourney champion Chicago Christian and runner-up Willowbrook.

For the tourney, junior outside hitter Emily Steininger (18 kills, 3 aces) and sophomore setter Autumn McGee (6 kills, 6 aces, 40 assists) were top contributors for the Eagles.

Harper College wins 2: Harper's Lauren Sokolowski put down 12 kills in a 17-25 25-18 25-9 25-15 victory over Elgin.

Sokolowski came back with 11 kills in a 24-26 24-26 25-21 25-17 15-11 triumph over Illinois Valley.
