Warren weathers Oswego East

Warren's boys soccer team built a big lead and then held on to edge visiting Oswego East 3-2 in a nonconference match Saturday.

Goals by Nick Haas, Chris Travis (penalty kick) and Ronaldo Garza had the Blue Devils up 3-0 at halftime. Kevin Penarrita and Richie Flores had assists, as Warren improved to 7-1-3.

Grayslake North 3, Antioch 2: The Knights rallied from a two-goal deficit at halftime to win the nonconference match.

"Our boys showed a lot of character and composure," coach Adam DeCaluwe said after his Knights improved to 6-4. "In the opening 10-15 minutes, we had a ton of energy and we were dictating a lot of the play. Antioch started to get some more control of things and put us under pressure from a couple scoring chances they created."

Iven Hernandez's pair of goals had Antioch up 2-0.

Sophomore Grant Nickolson scored the Knights' first after he got the ball from senior Lucas Buckels. Buckels flicked in the tying goal, which hit an Antioch defender and found the back of the net. Senior Fernando Sanchez earned a penalty kick for Grayslake North, and senior Zach Kottmer converted for the game-winning goal.

"We responded very well after halftime and found ourselves creating quality chances," DeCaluwe said, "and playing a majority of the second half in Antioch's half of the field."

Crystal Lake Central 1, Wauconda 0: The host Tigers scored in the second half of the nonconference game.

Shane Purcell had 6 saves in net for Wauconda (3-6).

Lakes 2, Grant 1: On Friday, Cesar Murua banged in the rebound of a Sean O'Brien shot with 45 seconds left to lift the visiting Eagles to the North Suburban Prairie win.

Murua also scored the first goal for Lakes (2-4-2, 1-0-1) with Stephen Mogged earning the assist. Eagles keeper Jack Monson made 6 saves. The game was scoreless at halftime.
