WR Bellamy may get a chance

If any of the injured wide receivers - Alshon Jeffery, Brandon Marshall and Josh Morgan - aren't ready to play Sunday night, roster moves will be made.

The Bears have four wide receivers on the practice squad, starting with first-year player Josh Bellamy, who caught 7 passes for 140 yards in the preseason.

"When he had opportunities, he made some plays," said Bears coach Marc Trestman. "He's been with us a long time. He knows the system."

The three other wide receivers on the practice squad are: Rashad Ross, Greg Herd, who was signed Tuesday; and Chris Williams, who was signed Thursday. Herd and Williams were in training camp with the Bears, and Ross and Williams have return capabilities.

Game planning:

Offensive coordinator Aaron Kromer said that with or without injured wide receivers Alshon Jeffery (hamstring) and Brandon Marshall (ankle) the play-calling would essentially be the same - but with some alterations.

"Obviously there are times when you feel like an Alshon Jeffery or Brandon Marshall is a mismatch against certain people," Kromer said. "So you're moving them around to try to get them the ball, but the coverage might not dictate that you throw them the ball. When they're not in there, you may be just calling more plays in general to beat coverages or defenses, as opposed to having a primary receiver that you're trying to get it to."

Return policy:

Only 3 of 11 kickoffs were returned in Sunday's season opener, a trend that will continue as long as kickoffs are from the 35-yard line.

But that doesn't mean the Bears will marginalize the job of returning kickoffs.

"That position, unfortunately, has become devalued in certain situations," Bears special teams coordinator Joe DeCamillis said. "I can tell you it's not going to be devalued here because you're not going to get that (optimum weather) day every day at Soldier Field, as we all know. We're going to have to keep working through that and keep that process going as the year moves on."

Senorise Perry started the season as the Bears' kickoff returner with Micheal Spurlock as the No. 2. But Spurlock was waived Tuesday. Wide receiver Santonio Holmes, the team's top punt returner, got some reps on kickoff return at practice during the week.
