Zion-Benton denies Mundelein

Mundelein's football team looked like it was going to win its first game of the season.

It didn't end well for the host Mustangs, however.

Zion-Benton scored 14 points in the fourth quarter to win 20-14 in a North Suburban Lake Division opener Friday night.

The Zee-Bees' big fourth quarter included running back Zyree McLean's 12-yard touchdown run on a sweep, quarterback Doug Gates' 76-yard TD pass to Jonathan Roberts and Gates' conversion run.

“We ran the ball very well,” said first-year Zion-Benton coach Bob Moynihan, whose Zee-Bees improved to 2-1. “We really couldn't get anything going with our passing game because of the (rainy) weather.”

Mundelein (0-3) was up 14-6 at halftime.

“At halftime we were a little down,” said Gates, who led Zion-Benton with 76 rushing yards. “(The coaches) told us to eliminate the mistakes and stop the stupid penalties and we should be OK in the second half.”

Mundelein scored when Alex Edmonds scored on a 2-yard run, and Colten Fisher sneaked in from 1-yard out.

“Our offense in the first half was amazing,” Mundelein coach George Kaider said. “Colten Fisher ran our option excellent. He calls most of his own plays from the line of scrimmage. His communications is flawless.”
