5 things to do in the suburbs this weekend

Elgin debuts its first fringe festival, Des Plaines celebrates the start of autumn and Wheaton flashes back to the days of the Revolutionary War. These are just a few of the things to do in the suburbs this weekend.

The British are coming:. Hundreds of living history actors from the Northwest Territory Alliance take part in a Revolutionary War re-enactment at Cantigny Park, 1S151 Winfield Road, Wheaton. Visitors can see mock battles and learn about life in the 18th century at an encampment of soldiers and civilians. Free with paid $5 parking fee. cantigny.org. 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday

On the Fringe: Elgin hosts its first Fringe Festival this weekend, featuring performances both cutting edge and traditional. The event includes music, theater, modern dance and burlesque, among other acts. A free Family Fringe is 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at Carleton Rogers Park, 55 N. Spring St. Other performances take place at venues across town. Admission requires purchase of a $3 Elgin Fringe Festival button at Side Street Studio Arts, 15 Ziegler Court, Elgin. Fall Fest: Des Plaines holds its Fall Fest 2014 at Lake Park Memorial Pavilion, 2200 Lee St. The annual celebration features concerts on the main stage, carnival rides, games, food, pony rides, Dave DiNaso's Traveling World of Reptiles, a custom car show and other family activities. Free admission. fallfestdesplaines.com. Noon to 11 p.m. Saturday and noon to 8 p.m. Sunday.

Opening night: Join the Elgin Symphony Orchestra opening night when Andrew Grams conducts Beethoven's Fifth Symphony with orchestral opera selections by Wagner and Weber at the Hemmens Cultural Center, 45 Symphony Way, Elgin. $25-$60.
