Chicago blusters through another record-setting cold day

Of all the things you were hoping for this year, was another record cold temperature one of them?

It's no Polar Vortex out there, but it is unseasonably cold in Chicago. So cold, in fact, that we set a record for the lowest high temperature Thursday.

We hit only 56 degrees, says Phil Schwarz of ABC 7 Chicago. The previous record for Sept. 11 was 61 degrees in 1940.

Thursday was also our coolest day since May 16, Schwarz says.

And things don't look much prettier this weekend.

Temperatures are expected to drop into the 40s tonight as the rain continues to hit the suburbs and city.

Saturday is expected to be mostly sunny but chilly with temperatures sticking in the 50s during the day and falling into the 40s at night. Sunday will fare just a tiny bit better with a high of 62.

Forecasters are calling for below-average temperatures all next week but expect to see things warm up to normal by next weekend.

It could be worse. Some parts of Wyoming got 20 inches of snow Thursday. Guess we should be grateful for our 56 degrees, gray skies and buckets of rain.
