Is new military memorial with 9/11 beam headed to Wauconda?

A failed plan to honor the troops and emergency personnel who've served in the war on terror with a memorial in Gurnee may have a second chance in Wauconda. Former Gurnee Trustee Kirk Morris announced on Facebook this week the Heroes of Freedom Memorial first proposed in 2005 "is moving to Wauconda." Officials have discussed building a memorial around a large beam from one of the fallen World Trade Center buildings that Morris has acquired. Full story.

McHenry County delays horse racing, other regulations

The McHenry County Board will continue its review next week on a host of new regulations, including restrictions on horse racing, storage of boats and recreational vehicles, and adult businesses in unincorporated areas. Ray Graham employee charged with defrauding residents

An administrator in the corporate offices of the Ray Graham Association is accused of stealing Illinois Link Cards from two of the association's satellite homes in Naperville and Downers Grove. Nakarria L. Bell, 31, of Chicago was charged with several counts of aggravated identity theft and financial exploitation of a person with a disability. Full story.

Driver accused of running over, killing skateboarder charged

A pedestrian killed Tuesday in McHenry by a driver accused of being drunk has been identified by the McHenry County coroner's office as 17-year-old Nicholas S. Kilpatrick. The driver, Justin A. Raven, 21, of Wonder Lake was charged with driving under the influence, driving under the influence over .08, and one felony count of aggravated driving under the influence. Full story.

Stanley Jachec was a talented structural engineer who moonlighted at the beach his family owned in Wauconda, where he helped design and build many of its attractions, including its four-story slide built on a platform.
