Elgin commemorates Sept. 11

More than 100 people attended Elgin's annual ceremony marking the anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks.

The event was held by the city of Elgin and the American Legion Thursday morning at City Hall Plaza.

Attendees, many of them police and fire department personnel, were on hand to honor the memory of those in public service who lost their lives 13 years ago, as well as to honor those who continue to serve.

Speakers included Police Chief Jeff Swoboda, Fire Chief John Fahy and Mayor David Kaptain.

Flags were at half-staff during the proceedings, which included a playing of Taps, a 21-gun salute and the ringing of a fire bell in remembrance of those who were killed in the attacks and the aftermath.
