Schaumburg man charged in murder for hire plot

Police charged a Schaumburg man with attempted murder for hire after prosecutors say he offered to pay an undercover officer $10,000 to kill his wife and another man.

Bail was set at $500,000 Friday for Nuruddin Khan, 49. He is being held in Cook County Jail on charges of solicitation of murder and solicitation of murder for hire. His arrest was the culmination of a joint investigation by the Office of the Cook County State's Attorney and the Illinois State Police.

Last month, a confidential informant told police that Khan, known as "Malik," was soliciting a murder for hire. On Aug. 25, Khan contacted an undercover officer posing as a hitman and arranged to meet him the next day at a suburban Home Depot parking lot, prosecutors said.

Khan told the undercover officer his wife and her boyfriend were living together at his house in South Chicago Heights. Khan agreed to pay $10,000 for the hit, prosecutors said. Additionally, he drew a floor plan of the house, described the easiest way to enter and suggested the undercover officer take his wife's jewelry box to make it look like a robbery, prosecutors said.

Authorities say Khan told the undercover officer he didn't care how the murder occurred. Prosecutors said Khan further stated he was having his wife and the other man killed to teach his daughter "good habits and good culture."

Khan met with the officer on Sept. 4 and gave him a $50 down payment on the murders and keys to his wife's home, prosecutors said.

Authorities say Khan has no criminal background. If convicted of the class X felonies, he faces up to 30 years in prison.

Khan next appears in a Maywood courtroom on Sept. 26.
