Genealogy organization changes name

The Northwest Suburban Council of Genealogists has adopted a new name. At the May 2014 business meeting, the membership voted to accept the name Northwest Suburban Genealogy Society.

After a series of strategic planning meetings, several new names were suggested.

"Our goal has been to make our name sound welcoming to genealogists of all levels of experience and expertise and to accurately reflect the purpose and composition of our group," said Barbara Sugden, past co-president.

The society was organized in 1976, under the original name following the completion of a Northwest Suburban High School District 214 Continuing Education class in genealogical research. Participants were eager to continue learning together and under the leadership of Harold Weary, the group was formed.

The organization meets regularly to hear experts in the field of genealogy share their knowledge at eight monthly Saturday morning meetings, which take place primarily at the Arlington Heights Senior Center, 1801 W. Central Road, Arlington Heights.

Besides presentations, these sessions also include an informal discussion for members and visitors to share their research challenges.

Everyone interested in genealogy is welcome to join. For more information, visit www.nwsgenealogy.org.
