Elk Grove Village board bans electronic cigarettes at public places
The Elk Grove Village board has formally approved a ban on the indoor use of electronic cigarettes at public places.
The 4-2 vote Tuesday follows an earlier discussion last month by trustees about treating the devices the same as regular cigarettes, which have been banned from public places in the village since 2007.
Supporters argued secondhand vapors emitted from electronic cigarettes may pose a health risk. Opponents, including Trustees Jeff Franke and Chris Prochno, said they wanted to see more research on the health effects of the devices before voting to ban them. Both said they were in favor of the part of the ordinance that bans the sale of electronic cigarettes to those under 18.
The regulations also prohibit using the devices within 15 feet of doorway entrances.
