U-46 seeks volunteers for advisory council

Elgin Area School District U-46 is seeking parent and community volunteers to serve on the Citizens' Advisory Council.

For more than 50 years, the council has served in an advisory capacity helping the U-46 school board and administration review policies and programs.

The group's first meeting of this school year will be at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 11, in the Elgin High School Auditorium, 1200 Maroon Drive.

"The CAC empowers parents and community members to play an active role in shaping the future of U-46," CAC Chairperson Mary VanSlyck said. "I am grateful that U-46 offers avenues for parents to get involved and welcomes input about the education of our children. The simplest way to have your voice heard is to get involved in the CAC."

This year, the council will focus its work on curriculum, secondary grading and assessment, finance, and the role of the school board. It meets once a month to share ideas and learn about how students are educated in the district.

Council representatives serve as liaisons between their schools and the council and district. Each U-46 school can have up to seven members representing it, including five parents and two community members.

Representatives attend monthly meetings and are strongly encouraged to join committees. Parents interested in representing their child's school should contact their principal.
