Arlington Heights village trustees decided last night to allow a pet store to stay open for now, in spite of a Cook County ordinance banning the sale of dogs from puppy mills. Happiness is Pets, 15 W. Golf Road, was granted an exemption from the puppy mill ban that owner Ronald Berning said would put him out of business when it goes into effect Oct. 1. Full story.

Deerfield man struck, killed in Wisconsin

A man killed while changing a tire along Interstate 94 in Wisconsin Sunday night has been identified as Joseph LoPiccolo, 62, of Deerfield. LoPiccolo had apparently gotten out of his vehicle to change a tire when a vehicle struck and killed him, police said. Full story.

Teens smash 75 mailboxes in Schaumburg, police say

Two teens smashed 75 mailboxes in Schaumburg early Monday morning, police said. One teen drove a white vehicle while another used a pipe to damage the mailboxes on the city's northwest side. Both were charged with multiple counts of misdemeanor damage to property. Full story.

Testimony continues in Wheeling murder trial

Testimony is expected to continue today in the murder trial of Collin Scheffler. Prosecutors say Scheffler, 20, of Prospect Heights, drove the car carrying Jesus E. Sanchez, who authorities say was aiming at a rival gang member when he shot Rafael Orozco by mistake about 9 p.m. May 1, 2013, in the 400 block drive of Pleasant Run Drive in the Winetree Apartments complex. Mount Prospect woman who injured 8 on tollway on probation for DUI

A Mount Prospect woman who police say was driving drunk Saturday when she struck and injured eight people on the Tri-State Tollway was sentenced to probation just days earlier for a previous DUI charge. A vehicle driven by Leslie W. Thurow, 59, struck and critically injured a state trooper before hitting another vehicle and causing it to roll over, police said. Full story.
