Flood advisory for suburbs extended as rain continues to fall

The National Weather Service has extended a flood advisory for the suburbs until 2:30 p.m. The weather service estimates two to four inches of rain has fallen on the area so far today, with another one to inches possible.

The flood watch for Lake, McHenry, Kane, DuPage and Cook counties means flooding in low lying areas is possible, while heavier rainfall may cause flash flooding that could result in some road closures.

The weather service estimates that 2-4 inches of rain has fallen so far today.

The National Weather Service said the area received torrential rainfall overnight, and that more is expected Wednesday morning, officials said Tuesday.

"We've got a warm front that's lifting across the area tonight, and that's going to bring some thunderstorms that are going to be accompanied by heavy rain and some pretty strong winds possibly," National Weather Service meteorologist Ben Deubelbeiss said.

This batch of storms will last until around 10 a.m.

The Community Collaboarative Rain Hail and Snow Network reports on their website that Bartlett in Cook County and Sugar Grove in DuPage County received about 1-inch of rain overnight. Lincolnshire in Lake County received about a half-inch of rainfall.

The weather service says there's a possibility of isolated damaging winds and frequent lightning from some of the morning storms, but said the risk for tornadoes is low.

There's a smaller chance of thunderstorms Wednesday afternoon.

For temperatures, Deubelbeiss said highs today should be in the upper 70s.

"Then the cold front sweeps through (Wednesday), so (Wednesday) night we're actually looking for lows in the low 50s. Maybe a few outlying areas might even dip into the upper 40s."
