Police: Couple, 2 pugs rescued on Lake Michigan

A man, a woman and two pugs have been rescued from a 48-foot motorboat after it caught fire on Lake Michigan.

Chicago Police Marine Unit Officer Marcus Buenrostro tells the Chicago Sun-Times that nearby boaters picked up the woman and dogs about a mile offshore Sunday afternoon before flames spread. Police responded after receiving a mayday call.

Buenrostro says the man jumped from the bow of his boat onto a police boat as the fire grew. He says crews doused the fire within minutes but the boat was destroyed.

No injuries were reported. The couple in their 30s had been living on the boat while their home was renovated. They were on their way back to Belmont Harbor.

It's unclear what started the fire. Smoke could be seen for miles.
