Storm cleanup continues across the suburbs
Cleanup from Friday's powerful storms continued in the Northwest suburbs on Monday, including at Old Orchard Country Club in Prospect Heights, where hard work and good timing combined to avoid disaster for a pair of events.
Strong winds felled numerous trees and branches on the course, and knocked out power to its clubhouse, jeopardizing a golf outing and wedding scheduled for Saturday, said Kathy Nowicki, executive director of the Prospect Heights Park District.
However, she said, crews showed up at 4 a.m. to move branches and other debris from the golf holes in time for the outing to tee off only a little later than scheduled.
"It was challenging," Nowicki said. "Quite a lot if effort was put in to get everything moved so the course could be played."
Later Saturday, clubhouse workers used generators to provide electricity needed to prepare for a scheduled wedding reception Saturday afternoon. Fortunately for the newlyweds, ComEd restored power to the facility just before the event was scheduled to begin.
"It all came together for us," Nowicki said.
