Immanuel celebrates German heritage with "Deutsch Fest"
Immanuel Lutheran Church of East Dundee will have a grander presence this year at Heritage Fest, Sept. 12-14.
In addition to its traditional complimentary coffee and water booth, Immanuel will sponsor "Deutsch Fest" in honor of its German heritage. Both tents will be located on the East Dundee side of the Fox River.
Immanuel was founded more than 150 years ago by German Lutheran immigrants.
"We thought it a great and fun idea to celebrate Dundee's Heritage Fest with a taste of Immanuel's German heritage," said senior pastor Rev. William Yonker. "Besides, hosting a gathering with brats, beer, German potato salad, and sauerkraut sure sounds like a whole lot of fun!"
As the Village of East Dundee continues to increase its Heritage Fest offerings on North River Street, the church, whose distinct profile can be seen in the village logo, decided the fundraiser would be a good opportunity to share fellowship and outreach with the community.
"It is important for Immanuel to be a good neighbor to the community," Rev. Yonker said. "We want to get to know our neighbors and to be known by them, as well as offer friendship, guidance, support, and the truth of God's love in Jesus."
The German party will be under a tent near the East Dundee Depot, serving brats and hotdogs, German potato salad, and other items during all three days of the fest. Fare will include a brew specially made for Immanuel by Emmett's Brewing Company of West Dundee called Himmelstor or "Heaven's Gate."
Community businesses that are providing donations to support Deutsch Fest and the Coffee Booth include Butcher on the Block in Lake in the Hills, and In the Neighborhood Meet Market and Benedict's, both in East Dundee.
Delicious German fare wouldn't be complete without a toe tapping polka or two. The band Die Musikmeisters will be performing at the Depot main stage on Friday from 6-8 p.m., Saturday from 5-7 p.m., and Sunday from noon to 2 p.m. The church welcomes people of all ages and heritages to join in the fun.
