Glenbrook South edges Metea Valley

The Metea Valley Mustangs took a tough loss at the hands of the Glenbrook South Titans, 33-30 on Friday night in Glenview.

The Mustangs started strong and finished strong but in between the Titans took advantage of three Mustangs fumbles in the first half to pull the game out with a field goal with 14 seconds left in the game.

A power outage knocked out the field lights with 4:57 left in the third quarter . The game was delayed for 20 minutes. The lights came back on but the scoreboard didn't. The referees kept the game clock on the field.

"There's no doubt we left it all on the field," Mustangs coach Ben Kleinhans. "We have great senior leadership and they are going to fight until the end. We know coming in that this team, Glenbard South, is so fundamentally sound that we had to earn everything. We were in a position to win a football game and that's where we want to be."

The Mustangs had a 14-3 lead after one quarter. But the Titans came back with four consecutive scores to open up a 30-14 lead going into the fourth quarter.

"This wasn't one of my good games," said the Mustangs' Bryson Oliver. "We came through adversity bat the end of the game punching it in to tie it up late in the fourth quarter, but we just came up short. The defense really helped us tonight. They kept up the momentum of the game for us."

Oliver had 131 yards on 31 carries. He scored the two touchdowns and a 2-point conversion to tie the game 30-30 with 2:26 left in the game.

"(Oliver) just keeps on going," Kleinhans said. "Everyone thinks he's too small to take it but he just keeps going. We played physical and Glenbrook South earned everything they got."

However, the Titans put together a 75-yard drive that included a 40-yard pass play from quarterback Fitz Stadler to Daniel Chase to bring the ball within field-goal range. With 14 seconds left, Henry Tarbox booted a 7-yard field goal to seal the win.

"It's a great feeling," said Stadler, who is heading to Arizona State as a baseball pitcher. "We came together at the end of the game."

The Mustangs are now 1-1 and open Upstate Eight Conference play against Barlett next week.

"It was a good game," said Titan coach Mike Hull. "We had our second backfield in due to injuries. They're good. They have real good athletes and skilled people. We knew we'd have our hands full."
