Dist. 158 students able to access porn on tablets

Parents of students in Huntley-Algonquin School District 158 are expressing frustration after they say their children were able to access pornographic images on school district-issued computer devices. Jennifer Kinney, a parent of a second grader, said she discovered her daughter's tablet had access to pornography after it was brought to her attention last month by two other families that "there was some risk, and something going on with the Internet filter not working. ... I saw completely inappropriate, obscene images, and then some," Kinney told the school board yesterday. Full story.

Chicago broadcasting legend Roy Leonard dies

Roy Leonard, the beloved radio broadcaster and host of WGN-TV's "Family Classics," died last night. WGN entertainment reporter Dean Richards said Leonard had been hospitalized in intensive care for a couple of weeks. Leonard was 83. Full story.

Three shot during Aurora restaurant robbery

Aurora police are interviewing two persons of interest after three people were shot last night during an attempted armed robbery at a KFC restaurant. The shooting occurred about 8:30 p.m. Three male employees were hit by gunfire - two of whom were critically wounded. Full story.

Garth Brooks kicks off tour in Rosemont

Garth Brooks kicked off his World Tour in Rosemont last night with the first of 11 shows at the Allstate Arena. It's been 17 years since Brooks has performed in the Chicago area. Brooks, 52, hit the stage with his band Thursday night around 9 p.m., running from one end to the other and pumping his fist for the welcoming crowd. He grabbed a guitar for the second song, which ended with the superstar surrounded by his bandmates in an iconic pose in the center of the stage. Former forest district headquarters burns down in Libertyville

Lake County Forest Preserve District employees will be examining the site of their former headquarters in Libertyville today - a day after the building went up in flames - and just before it was scheduled to be demolished Saturday. The fire was reported about 3:15 p.m. yesterday - almost two hours after firefighters who were doing live fire training left for the day. "It was supposed to happen anyway," said Libertyville Fire Chief Rich Carani. "It just happened a little bit earlier." Full story.

Joan Rivers remembered as trailblazing comedian

Joan Rivers is being remembered for helping break the ceiling for female comedians in the 1960s and her harsh critiques of celebrities on Hollywood red carpets. And she was unapologetic about her plastic surgery. "Our business is so youthful. ... You do little tweaks, and I think if a woman wants to look good, or a man, do it," she said in 2010. Conte knows it won't be easy with Bears fans

Bears free safety Chris Conte might not have that many people rooting for him in Sunday's season opener, even though the game is at Soldier Field, writes Bears beat writer Bob LeGere. Conte incurred more than his share of wrath from fans frustrated with a group that allowed more points than any Bears team in franchise history.
