Wisconsin mother charged with homicide in child's death

MADISON, Wis. - A mother has been charged with homicide in Dane County after her 1-year-old daughter was struck and killed by a van while riding in a wheelchair.

A criminal complaint says 33-year-old Raya Hansen was under the influence of drugs when she wheeled her daughter along a busy street in Madison in February of 2013. Hansen told police she thought she dropped her daughter's bottle, stopped to look for it and the wheelchair rolled into the street and was hit.

The State Journal says Hansen is charged with second-degree reckless homicide and child neglect resulting in death. Prosecutors allege Hansen was too impaired to care for the toddler. She is currently in the Taycheedah Correctional Institution serving a sentence unrelated to her daughter's death.

Online court records do not list an attorney for Hansen.
