New pet rescue plans open house in Palatine

Barb's Precious Rescue and Adoption Center, a new not-for-profit animal rescue in Palatine, will begin offering pets for adoption Monday, Sept. 1, and plans an open house for Saturday, Sept. 6.

Located at 313 N. Quentin St., the rescue officially opened on Aug. 11. In a couple of short weeks, it has become home to more than 45 cats and kittens … and the number keeps growing. Potential owners will need to fill out an application and complete an interview. A $150 fee includes updated shots, as well as the cost of spay or neutering. The community is invited to an open house and tour from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.

"We are thrilled to be Palatine's first animal rescue and adoption facility," founder Barb Weber said. "I want to thank the Village of Palatine and its leaders for the support they have given us. We hope many in the community will come for our open house and learn more about our mission."

Weber, a Palatine resident, has been rescuing cats and kittens for more than two decades and finding them homes. Her passion led her to design the new 2,200-square-foot facility as a temporary sanctuary for animals in need. With special rooms for kittens (2 months and younger), toddlers (3 months to a year old), teenagers (1-2 years) and adults, the rescue is a safe retreat.

The current animals were found in Palatine and neighboring communities. The furry residents have different stories; some were abandoned, neglected or abused. Others were once beloved pets given up in unfortunate circumstances. But their needs are the same. Today, in their new home, they are experiencing a beautiful, clean environment, steady meals, needed health care, and plenty of love and compassion.

"For many years, I have been helping to trap, treat, and find homes for cats and kittens in the community, " Weber said. "In the process, I saw too many animals alone and injured, with nowhere to go. Our goal is to give them the attention, love and socialization they need to be great pets in anyone's home."

The rescue is looking for volunteers, as well as donations of wet and dry cat and kitten food. For more information and the hours of operation, go to barbspreciousrescue.org.
