Grandson charged in slaying of 85-year-old East Dundee woman

The grandson of an 85-year-old East Dundee woman stabbed to death last month was charged yesterday with her death. Richard Schmelzer, 41, was taken into custody Monday afternoon in Frisco, Texas, a suburb of Dallas. Schmelzer was formerly a trainer for the Harlem Globetrotters, the world-famous razzle-dazzle basketball squad. Full story.

Arlington Heights selects developer for troubled site

Arlington Heights has set its sights on a developer to plan redevelopment near the intersection of Golf and Arlington Heights roads and the International Plaza shopping center. The village's committee of the whole last night recommended approving a deal with Steve Leonard, who would be working with Strategic Real Estate, which specializes in shopping centers with national retailers, and Sterling Bay Companies, a developer in the Chicago area, to find tenants for the proposed development. Elgin man exposes himself outside school, police say

An Elgin man was arrested yesterday on charges he exposed himself and threatened people outside St. Laurence School in Elgin, police said. Police were called just before 2:30 p.m., regarding a person acting in a threatening and irrational manner in the parking lot of, police said in a news release. Full story.

Two Elgin High students charged with bringing pellet gun to school

Two Elgin High School students were charged with disorderly conduct and a possessing an air rifle after students notified administrators that a student brought a gun to school. The weapon, a pellet gun, was recovered and another friend who showed the gun off to students earlier in the day was also charged. Full story.

District 95 puts new heat policy into effect on first day

Lake Zurich Unit District 95 used its new excessive heat policy right off the bat - on the very first day of school yesterday. District 95 officials said the excessive-heat procedures were formed for 2014-15 in response to concerns from parents and school board members. Five of eight District 95 buildings, all in Lake Zurich, don't have central air conditioning. Full story.

Four plead not guilty in Addison heroin bust

An Elgin man and his two sons, along with an Addison man, all pleaded not guilty yesterday to felony drug trafficking charges carrying a sentence of between 15 and 60 years in prison. Prosecutors said the charges stem from an investigation earlier this summer that led to the recovery of the heroin with a street value of more than $700,000. Full story.

Jackie Robinson West team welcomed home

Firefighters sprayed the plane carrying the U.S. Little League World Series champion Jackie Robinson West team as it returned home yesterday. Hundreds of fans greeted the team at Midway Airport. The team beat Las Vegas in the United States final before falling Sunday to South Korea. Full story.
