The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency is seeking enforcement action against a Cicero company after an oil spill reached a nearby canal.

The EPA said Tuesday that it's asked Attorney General Lisa Madigan's office to obtain an order requiring Olympic Oil Ltd., to stop the spill and clean up contaminated soil and water. The facility blends and packages petroleum lubricating oil and antifreeze products.

The agency says an investigation last Friday found that petroleum products spilled over an on-site containment structure and ran into the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal.

Containment booms were placed in the canal and a trench dug to contain petroleum from the site. Officials say 1,650 gallons have been collected and removed so far.

A company official says they are "working diligently" to comply with all requirements.
