2 men face charges in Harvey standoff

Two men have been charged in connection with a 20-hour standoff this week in Harvey that police say began as a robbery attempt.

The Chicago Sun-Times cites the Cook County state's attorney's office in reporting that the men were charged Thursday night with attempted murder, home invasion, kidnapping and sexual assault. The newspaper said one was a convicted murderer who was on electronic home monitoring as a condition of his parole. The two were expected to appear in bond court Friday.

The standoff began Tuesday afternoon when police in Harvey responded to a report of a possible home burglary. Two officers were wounded in an initial exchange of gunfire, and the suspects barricaded themselves inside the home with eight hostages - two women and six children.
