Schaumburg book, film groups gear up for new season

Those who enjoy reading books and watching movies know the experience is even more fun when you can share your thoughts with others. For this reason, the Schaumburg Township District Library offers a variety of discussion groups, many of which meet from September through May. Registration has begun, and books are ready for distribution. If one of the following groups sounds appealing to you, sign up, grab your book, and get ready for a lively discussion that could even lead to new friendships. Register by phone or at the Information or Fiction Desk, depending on the group.

The American Cinema and Literature Group meets the second and fourth Wednesdays of each month, 6:30-9 p.m., at the Hanover Park Branch, 1266 Irving Park Road. Participants view the movie, then read the book of the same title. September's selection is "Monuments Men." The $25 fee includes all of the books for the season. Register at the Information Desk.

People who read and speak Korean may enjoy the Korean Book Discussion, which gathers on the fourth Tuesday of each month, 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m., in the Rasmussen South Room of the Central Library, 130 S. Roselle Road, Schaumburg. September's selection will be "Demian" by Hermann Hesse. The $35 fee includes the book for the season. Register at the Information Desk. Those who read and speak Polish are invited to join the Polish Book Discussion, which meets from 7:30-9 p.m., the second Wednesday of each month, in the Rasmussen South Room. September's title will be "Zanim Sie Pojawiles" by Jojo Moyes. The $35 fee includes books. Register at the Information Desk. For information, call (847) 923-3391.

Those participating in the Worlds Await Book Discussion Group have a choice of dates and locations. The group meets each month on the third Tuesday, the third Thursday and the fourth Tuesday at the central library in Schaumburg. It also meets on the fourth Friday of each month at the Hoffman Estates Branch, 1550 Hassell Road. Check the library's Program Guide for details. September's selection will be "The Boys in the Boat," by Daniel James Brown. A fee of $25 covers the books for the whole season. Register at the Information Desk. If you love crime and suspense stories, join Murder by the Book Mystery Book Discussion which meets at 7 p.m., every other month, in the Rasmussen North Room of the central library in Schaumburg. The Aug. 21 selection will be "Maisie Dobbs" by Jacquelyn Winspear. Limited library copies are available from the Fiction Desk. The Nov. 6 selection will be "Broken Harbor" by Tana French. Limited library copies will be available from the Fiction Desk upon registration beginning one month prior to the program.

Love romance? You'll love the Happily Ever After Romance Book Discussion which will meet at 7 p.m., Monday, Sept. 22, in the Rasmussen North Room. Library copies of "Dark Lover" by J.R. Ward will be available from the Fiction Desk upon registration, one month prior to the meeting.

If you'd enjoy meeting off-site, the library will host Read a Latté from 7-8 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 24, at the Streets of Woodfield Starbucks, 601 N. Martingale Road. September's meeting will celebrate Banned Books Week with a discussion of "The Color Purple" by Alice Walker. Loan copies will be available on a first-come, first-served basis at the Fiction Desk upon registration.

Prefer nonfiction? Join the Second Floor Reads group for September's discussion of "Hiroshima" by John Hersey from 6:30-8 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 24, in the Rasmussen North Room. Loan copies are available on a first-come, first-served basis from the Information Desk on the library's second floor.

If you take pleasure in talking about books and movies in a fun, relaxed environment, come and join one of the library's discussion groups. The new season is just beginning!
