Elgin school's new name official at back-to-school barbecue

Sheridan Elementary School will host a renaming ceremony on Friday, Aug. 15, to commemorate its new name - Ronald D. O'Neal Elementary School. The school is being renamed in honor of the district's first African-American administrator.

In January 2014, the U-46 Board of Education approved renaming Sheridan Elementary School to the Ronald D. O'Neal Elementary School. O'Neal came to Elgin Area School District U-46 as principal of Sheridan Elementary in 1970, becoming the first African-American administrator in U-46's history. He later served as principal of Larsen Middle School and Elgin High School. After serving U-46 and its communities for more than 30 years, O'Neal died in 2009. The request to rename Sheridan came from a retired U-46 administrator.

The Back-to-School barbecue will begin at 2:30 p.m. and the renaming ceremony will be held at 3 p.m.

All Ronald D. O'Neal Elementary students, their families, and community members are invited to celebrate with the school staff.

The school is at 510 Franklin Blvd., Elgin. For more information, visit u-46.org.
