Wildwood Park District To Stock Valley Lake

The Wildwood Park District announced plans at their June board meeting to address swimmer's itch at Valley Lake. Swimmer's Itch is a temporary skin infection acquired by bathers who accidently become involved in the life cycle of the trematode worm. Bathers have reported this condition after swimming in Valley Lake. This fall, the district will begin stocking redear sunfish in an effort to reduce the snail population. Redear sunfish are known to feed off of the snails, thereby reducing the numbers.

Infected snails release cercariae, which finds their way to humans, penetrates the skin and causes red, itchy bumps. While very uncomfortable, this condition does clear up and relief may be found from lotions and antihistamine medications.

The district is also working to educate residents on swimmer's itch and preventative measures that may lessen symptoms. Showering and immediately toweling off after leaving the water, combined with a sunscreen application before entering the water have been suggested to help alleviate symptoms. Efforts should also be made to not feed the ducks and waterfowl. In addition, residents are asked to refrain from using high phosphorous fertilizers on lawns as it enhances the snail's environment.
