Glen Ellyn Park District seeking tax money for aquatic center

Glen Ellyn Park District voters will get the chance in November to decide if they want to pay for construction of an indoor aquatic center.

Park commissioners agreed Tuesday to put a referendum on the fall ballot that will ask residents if they want the district to issue bonds to pay for building and equipping the proposed facility that would be attached to the Ackerman Sports & Fitness Center at 800 St. Charles Road.

Officials say they will seek $13.5 million for the project.

If voters approve the proposal, officials say park district property taxes would remain the same because the cost of building the center would replace a portion of the tax levy that is set to expire.

If voters reject the proposal, the district's share of the property tax bill would decrease, according to the district's website.

The owner of a $400,000 home now pays the district about $583 in annual property taxes.

The proposed indoor aquatic center would be “integrated” into the Ackerman Sports & Fitness Center, officials said. The aquatic facility would include a 25-yard stretch pool, diving boards, seating for spectators, and a separate, smaller warm-water pool.

Earlier this summer, the district's executive director, Dave Harris, said an aquatic center is a facility that can be used by a wide cross-section of residents and addresses the need for a public indoor swimming pool in the community.
