Police: Gurnee man hit by train drove around crossing gates

Round Lake Park police said a driver is in critical condition after he drove around crossing gates and in front of a Metra commuter train early Saturday.

Police Chief George Filenko said a 46-year-old Gurnee man may have been under the influence of alcohol when his vehicle was struck by a northbound train about 1:45 a.m. at Route 134 and Porter Drive. Area fire departments had to extricate the man from the four-door Oldsmobile Alero.

Filenko said the man, who has yet to be charged, was taken to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville where he is in critical condition with extensive traumatic injuries. He said there are “some indications alcohol was involved” in the crash but did not elaborate.

About 50 passengers were on the special Lollapalooza train, according to Filenko. No one on the train was injured and it continued north after a one-hour delay.
