Interfaith Solar Social to be held Aug. 23 in Elgin

An Interfaith Solar Social will take place on from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Aug. 23, at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Elgin, 39W830 Highland Ave.

Installation of photovoltaic solar systems is one of the most actionable steps that can be taken by individuals and small groups of people to combat climate change. The faith community is in an especially unique position to bring awareness and to take positive action against climate change.

A call to the faith community to solarize houses of worship throughout Chicagoland is planned by the Illinois Solar Energy Association as part of its Solar Social program. An "Interfaith Solar Social," with focus on the faith community, will be hosted by the Unitarian Universalist Church of Elgin.

Participating in the event will be Faith in Place and students of Math and Science Academy of Elgin Area School District U-46.

The following program is planned for this Solar Social:

• Opening remarks - Interim Minister the Rev. Lise Adams Sherry.

• Status of PV solar energy industry in Illinois - ISEA representative.

• The power of connected congregations - the Rev. Brian Sauder, executive director, Faith in Place.

• PV installation case history and alternative financing models for the faith community - Jun Yoshitani, UUCE.

• Youth organizing for renewable energy and combating climate change - Generations Affecting Integrated Awareness, students from Math and Science Academy District U-46.

• Informal socializing and discussions about PV solar energy installations.
