Arlington Park trainer Wayne Catalano, hospitalized with pneumonia, doing better

Legendary Arlington Park trainer Wayne Catalano, hospitalized since Tuesday with pneumonia, is doing better, his wife said Friday.

"He is improving," said Renee Catalano, who remained at her husband's bedside Friday in the intensive care unit at St. Alexius Medical Center in Hoffman Estates. "He's still in critical condition, but he's making slow progress."

"We're all positive and he's being real strong. He's got a tough battle here, but he's good."

Catalano was formally diagnosed with pneumonia and given an IV and medicine at a doctor's visit Sunday. But his condition worsened, leading to his hospitalization Tuesday.

Catalano, who turned 58 on Thursday, is an 11-time Arlington Park training champion. He has the second most wins for a trainer at Arlington Park.
