Chicago lawyer named ambassador to Czech Republic

A Chicago attorney has been confirmed as the United States' ambassador to the Czech Republic.

U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin issued a statement Wednesday after the U.S. Senate confirmed Andrew Schapiro as ambassador. Durbin says Schapiro is the son of a Czech immigrant and takes the post at "an important time." Durbin says the Czech Republic is "one of our most important NATO allies."

Schapiro graduated from high school in the southern Chicago suburbs and is currently a partner at an international law firm in downtown Chicago. He graduated from Harvard Law School and was a law clerk at both the U.S. Supreme Court and federal court.
